Having a Twitter (X) account is a good idea. Just be careful with the information you consume. Don’t buy into hype and fear-mongering.

Big companies usually have an agenda and most ‘influencers’ have no clue about how to apply the knowledge they share. They tend to share recklessly.

Brag Doc

Most engineers downplay their contributions in their self-assessments simply because they forget what they did. To gather evidence for all your great work, here are a few places you can look at:

  • Your weekly work log / brag doc / yay me file (I really hope you have one, an if you don’t, please start one asap)
  • Your 1-1 with your manager docs (this would be another great one to keep track of)
  • Has anybody publicly thanked you for anything? (you should keep track of it)
  • Look through the pull requests, commits, and issues you filed
  • Look through how many code reviews you did
  • Look at the calendar events and meetings you scheduled
  • Look for documents you authored in Google Drive — or equivalent company document management system
  • Look for mentions of yourself through Slack — or equivalent company chat

Collecting this data will be very helpful to justify your performance even if you might not be applying for promotion. And you’ll be grateful you have it at hand when you are applying for a promotion.
